August is Washington Wine Month and we are celebrating by raising a glass from one of our favorite Washington wineries.

Take a trip to Red Mountain, a small Washington wine region, and you’ll find where “soil meets soul.” That is, you’ll taste delicious and distinctive wine from producers like our friends at Kuvée Partner Winery, Hedges Family Estate. Part French craftsmen, part cowboys, this boutique, 2nd generation family winery is focused on making wines that showcase their estate vineyards and their Red Mountain home.

The Family

Hedges Family Estate was founded by husband and wife duo, Tom Hedges and Annie-Marie Liégeois in 1987 with the release of their first wine, a Cabernet-Merlot blend. A love of wine and the vineyard life was passed down to their children, Christophe and Sarah. Though when you mix growing up on Red Mountain with childhood memories of visiting Annie-Marie’s parents in Champagne, France and drinking the local wines, we’re not sure how it would be possible to escape the lure of the family business. Hedges officially became a 2nd generation winery over 10 years ago, and while Tom and Annie-Marie are still involved in the winery operations, Christophe is the General Manager and Sarah is the Head Winemaker.

Red Mountain and the wine

Forget the damp and gloomy image of the Pacific Northwest you have in your mind. Red Mountain is the warmest growing region in Washington, and receives very little rain during the growing season. The climate, mixed with unique soil types, and other environmental factors create the growing conditions for the recognizable wines produced in this small region. As Sarah puts it, “You definitely know when you are smelling or tasting a wine from Red Mountain, it’s that distinct. Red Mountain is a place where you can farm your wine instead of make it.”

Red wines like Cabernet, Syrah and Cab-based blends are some of the most sought out wines from Red Mountain (Hedges is no exception here). These wines are loved for their earthy and concentrated flavors, or in the words of Christophe, a certain “brooding elegance.” We think that perfectly captures what you can expect from the wines at Hedges Family Estate, and what has made their wines a Kuvée staff and customer favorite.

Let's make the wine party social

Christophe and Sarah are joining us for a very special Facebook Live Q&A on August 22nd at 7pm EST. We're talking wine, Red Mountain and everything else you wanted to know about the vineyard life. The party's only happening on our Sip and Tell facebook group, so make sure you join.

Give it a swirl

The estate Cab-based Blend: Red Mountain Red Blend

If you try just one wine from Hedges (though really, why stop at one), Christophe and Sarah think it should be this one. This is a flagship wine of the estate, which represents all vineyard blocks farmed within the Hedges Family Estate vineyard portfolio.

The estate Syrah: Red Mountain Syrah

Syrahs generally are medium to full-bodied, with hints of blackberry and pepper. Hedges Family Estate Syrah is no different, but also includes savory and spicy notes. This complex, layered wine really showcases the earthy style of Red Mountain.

The Cabernet-Merlot-Syrah Blend: Hedges CMS Red Blend

Washington's original red blend has been produced by the estate since 1987. Consistently recognized as one of the best values in Washington State, CMS Red combines elegance and historic blending practices with top quality vineyard sources in the Columbia Valley.

The mostly Cabernet: Hedges H.I.P. Cabernet

Hedges marries the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with the savage characteristics of Syrah. The Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the Columbia Valley, the larger growing region of Washington, while the richness of Syrah is picked from the Red Mountain AVA.
