As we’re all familiar, many Americans celebrate a tradition that has been inherited from cultures around the world: beginning a meal with a toast from the host. While your wine glass will already be full, it’s considered polite to wait until the host has finished their toast and taken their first sip before you start drinking, after one of my favorite traditions, a cheers. Etiquette in some cultures even dictates that you must maintain eye contact with the host for the full length of their toast.
